Biochemical Changes in Burns

چکیده
Background: Burns are the second leading cause of death resulting from childhood injuries. It is estimated that there are approximately 3,000 pediatric deaths annually due to burns and probably three times as many disabling injuries. Liver is one of the major organs affected by thermal injury. Objective of the study was to measure liver enzymes and serum electrolytes. Results: In the present study we found (highly significant) 23 times elevation in AST, 21 times in ALT, 4 times increase in ALP, 1.7 times decrease in sodium and 1.4 times increase in potassium levels. Conclusion: An increase in edema formation in burns patients may lead to cell damage, with the release of the hepatic enzymes. Liver enzymes, such as aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine amino transferase (ALT) are the most sensitive indicators of hepatocyte injury. Cellular injury or changes in cell membrane permeability, leak these enzymes into circulation. Low Na & high K+ occurs because of increased vascular permeability and cell edema. This enzymes might be the predictive markers of prognosis in burns patients.

Quantitative changes of mast cells following topical application of honey on third degree burns in rats
The purpose of present study was determination of number changes of mast cells in a honey treated experimental model of third degree burn. A third degree burn was made in 24 adult female rats by direct contact of skin with boiling water for 8 seconds. Rats were divided randomly into four groups. Group 1: Burns of this group remained untreated (control group). Groups 2 and 3: Burns of these grou...

متن کاملDetermination of lymphocytes surface markers in patients with thermal burns and the influence of burn size on mononuclear cell subsets
Background: Thermal burn injuries impair the host defence system. Hence, in the present study, we aimed at investigating the changes in the number and phenotype of peripheral blood lymphocyte populations (T, B, and natural killer cells) and their subpopulations in patients with thermal burns and determining the relationships with different sizes of total body surface area (TBSA). ...

متن کاملVoice Recovery in a Patient with Inhaled Laryngeal Burns
Introduction: Laryngeal burns cause long-term voice disorders due to mucosal changes of the vocal folds. Inhalation injuries affect voice production and result in changes in the mucosal thickness and voice quality. Case Report: A 47-year-old woman was transferred to our department with laryngeal burns sustained during a house fire. On laryngoscopic examination, mucosal waves of both vocal fol...
